The Daily Prayer for the Lord's Day: August 9, 2026
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. (Genesis 2:1-3, ESV)
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. (Exodus 20:8-11, ESV)
“If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath,
from doing your pleasure on my holy day,
and call the Sabbath a delight
and the holy day of the Lord honorable;
if you honor it, not going your own ways,
or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly;
14 then you shall take delight in the Lord,
and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth;
I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” (Isaiah 58:13-14, ESV)
Prayer: Our God, you made the world and all that is in it in the space of six days, and all very good. On the seventh day you set an example for us by resting from your labors. In your Word we are told to keep the Sabbath Day holy by endeavoring to spend the day in worship and ceasing from our normal, lawful duties that take much of our time throughout the week. You made the Sabbath for us because you know our frame and know that we are dust. You made this day for us to enjoy by doing what we were made to do: enjoy you. Yet, our God, we lament the current state of things in your church and world. It is one thing for unregenerate people to trample underfoot the Lord's Day. It is another thing for your redeemed people to do the same. Yet, our Father, we witness it each week. We see this holy day treated as though it is ordinary and common. We witness your people behaving like the world on this day that is made for them. We, too, struggle with it at times. Each time we do, we sin. Forgive us, Father. Please help us to honor this day with all our hearts. Please help us to worship you with all affection possible for sinners. Please help us to listen to you as your Word is read and preached. Please guard our tongues and help us to use our conversations to strengthen the faith of our brothers and sisters. Please help us to delight in you, and the day you have made to be used for your glory. We pray these things through Christ our Lord. Amen.
