Distinctives

Christ-Centered

It’s all about Jesus. Whenever the Word of God is preached, practiced, and portrayed it is through the lens of Christ. We believe that Christ Jesus is the centerpiece of human history. Because that is so, we look to Him as supreme in all things.

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.” - Colossians 1:15–18

Reformed

When the magisterial reformers sought to reform the Roman Catholic Church they heralded five pillars of the church which are now known as the “Five Solas”.

  1. The authority of scripture: Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone)

  2. The basis of salvation: Sola Gratia (Grace alone)

  3. The means of salvation: Sola Fide (Faith alone)

  4. The merit of salvation: Solus Christus (Christ alone)

  5. The glory of salvation: Soli Deo Gloria (Glory to God alone)

Confessional

The Presbyterian Church in America, our denomination, holds the Westminster Standards as our confessional standard. When the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America was formed in 1788, it adopted (with minor revisions) the Westminster Confession of Faith, Larger and Shorter Catechisms (1647), as its secondary standards (the Bible itself being the only infallible rule of faith and practice). Officers in the Presbyterian Church in America take a vow to “sincerely receive and adopt” these confessional documents “as containing the system of doctrine taught in the Holy Scriptures.”

Presbyterian

Here at Providence Church we are proud to support the work and mission of the Illiana Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in America.  Through our voluntary connection in the PCA, we are able to work together with hundreds of other churches that are just as committed to sharing the love of Christ and truth of God's inspired Word with people all over the world.  Our focus, of course, is right here in the Evansville area. For a more succinct understanding of Presbyterianism and Reformed Theology we recommend you check out our denomination’s belief page found here.

Faithful to the Scriptures, True to the Reformed Faith, and Obedient to the Great Commission.
