O Lord, how many are my foes!
Many are rising against me;
many are saying of my soul,
“There is no salvation for him in God.”
Devotional for January 3, 2025
Reading: Genesis 3 | Matthew 3 | Psalm 3
Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,
“Let us burst their bonds apart
and cast away their cords from us.”
Devotional for January 2, 2025
Reading: Genesis 2 | Matthew 2 | Psalm 2
NOTE: One of my goals this year is to pray through the Psalms, taking up each Psalm in order. There will be days when I use other passages or a portion of a Psalm, but most prayers will follow the order of the Psalms. The prayers will typically follow the A-C-T-S method (adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication)
Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
Day One: Genesis 1, Matthew 1, Psalm 1

Read MoreThe Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
When evildoers assail me
to eat up my flesh,
my adversaries and foes,
it is they who stumble and fall.
Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth and teach me,
for you are the God of my salvation;
for you I wait all the day long. (Psalm 25:4-5, ESV)
The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof,
the world and those who dwell therein,
for he has founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work (2 Tim. 3:16-17, ESV)
I have stored up your Word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you. (Psa. 119:11, ESV)
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. (Josh. 1:8, ESV)

A few observations, by way of introduction, are essential. First, it is a song sung by the pilgrims on their journey to Jerusalem. Second, and of importance, it is written by Solomon. The first item may be related to the house of the LORD, the Temple. The second item may carry a double meaning. First, it may mean the very house Solomon built as his palace (see 1 Kings 7).
