Daily Prayer for the Lord's Day, January 18, 2026: Isaiah 58:13-14

“If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath,
    from doing your pleasure on my holy day,
and call the Sabbath a delight
    and the holy day of the Lord honorable;
if you honor it, not going your own ways,
    or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly;
14 then you shall take delight in the Lord,
    and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth;
I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,
    for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
(Isaiah 58:13-14, ESV)

Prayer: Our God in heaven, you who are holy and dwell in unapproachable light, we bless and praise your name today because you are worthy of our worship, adoration, and love. You have rescued your people from the clutches of the Evil One, setting our feet on the solid rock that is the Lord Jesus Christ. You have saved us from the tyranny of sin and death and given us the means by which we can wage war against the world, the flesh, and the devil. You give us your Word, and through the preaching of it, you speak to your people. You give us the Lord’s Day as a small reminder of the heavenly rest we await — a rest that frees us entirely from the effects of this fallen world. Yet, Father, we know that we do not always take advantage of these good gifts you give. Too often, we make excuses and trample underfoot the day that is designed to help us in our pilgrimage to our heavenly rest. Too often, we seek our pleasures on this holy day instead of that which pleases you. Too often, our conversations are frivolous and do not edify your people in goodness and holiness. In these things, we seek your forgiveness. Please, Lord, help us to learn that you made the Sabbath for us. Please help us to know the glorious promise attached to those who honor you by honoring this day that you have made for our good. Please grant us a love of the Lord’s Day as those who say we love you. We pray these things through Christ our Lord. Amen.
