Daily Prayer for June 25, 2025: Psalm 2

Why do the nations rage
    and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves,
    and the rulers take counsel together,
    against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,
3 “Let us burst their bonds apart
    and cast away their cords from us.”

4 He who sits in the heavens laughs;
    the Lord holds them in derision.
5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath,
    and terrify them in his fury, saying,
6 “As for me, I have set my King
    on Zion, my holy hill.”

7 I will tell of the decree:
The Lord said to me, “You are my Son;
    today I have begotten you.
8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
    and the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You shall break them with a rod of iron
    and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.”

10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
    be warned, O rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear,
    and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son,
    lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
    for his wrath is quickly kindled.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
(Psalm 2, ESV)

Prayer: Our God, you alone are the true King and Sovereign over all creation. You direct the affairs of men and order their steps according to your infinite wisdom. You guide their hands according to your divine providence, and you accomplish your will despite the efforts of men to frustrate it. We thank you for your sovereign rule over all you have made. We thank you that we can trust you as a result because we know that you will bring all things to pass for the good of the church you have redeemed. Yet, Father, we witness so many people rebelling against you and against your Anointed, the Lord Jesus. Though you have told them what your Word requires, they persist in their depravity, plotting in vain to overthrow you and your plans. We know that you laugh at the efforts of men. We know that you will frustrate them until they bow the knee to you or perish in their sins. We pray for those who live this way, asking that you will cause them to kiss the Son, lest you be angry with them. We pray for their souls, asking that you will open the eyes and ears of our leaders, bringing them to a right understanding of your power and might and willingness to save them from their sin. We pray that you will do what we cannot do -- change their hearts, O Lord. Please do it for their sake, and the sake of your people, we ask and pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
