SCRIPTURE LESSON Matthew 26:1-35 Mr. David Matzen, Ruling Elder
As the plot to kill Jesus gains momentum, Jesus is anointed for burial, institutes the Lord’s Supper, and foretells Peter’s denial. He makes provision for His disciples even in His hour of greatest need.
CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN
All: Our Father, you are glorious and mighty, the one true God of heaven and earth and the God who has redeemed your people through the work of your beloved Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. As we hear your Word, we are again reminded of that which the Lord’s Supper teaches: the broken body and the spilled blood of our Lord on our behalf because of our sin. Forgive us, Father, for treating the Supper of the Lord so casually. Forgive us for not preparing for it, not thinking upon it, and not getting up from it and living as you command us. Please grant us a greater understanding of this Meal, and may it move our hearts and minds with greater affection for the true Passover Lamb, the Lord Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Isaiah 53:1-5
Minister:
Who has believed what he has heard from us?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For he grew up before him like a young plant,
and like a root out of dry ground;
he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
and no beauty that we should desire him.
He was despised and rejected by men,
a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
and as one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.
All: Amen.
CONFESSION OF FAITH Westminster Confession of Faith, Ch. 12 Mr. David Matzen, Ruling Elder
What do the Scripture teach us about the doctrine of adoption?
All those that are justified God vouchsafeth, in and for his only Son Jesus Christ, to make partakers of the grace of adoption; by which they are taken into the number, and enjoy the liberties and privileges of the children of God; have his name put upon them; receive the Spirit of adoption; have access to the throne of grace with boldness; are enabled to cry, Abba, Father; are pitied, protected, provided for, and chastened by him as by a father; yet never cast off, but sealed to the day of redemption, and inherit the promises, as heirs of everlasting salvation.
