~WORSHIP IN CONFESSION~
SCRIPTURE LESSON Matthew 23
Mr. Chris Turner, Ruling Elder
Having debated the religious authorities in chapters 21 and 22, Jesus now denounces the scribes and Pharisees, pronouncing seven woes upon them, and concluding with a lament for Jerusalem’s unbelief.
CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN
All: Our Father in heaven, please grant us willing hearts and minds that we would worship you and honor you in sincerity and truth. We have heard your Word and are ashamed of how easily we behave like the hypocrites of our Savior’s day. We mourn the reality of indwelling sin that stains our desire to love you and serve you with a true and right zeal. Forgive us when we ‘preach, but do not practice what we preach.’ Forgive us for laboring to make the outside neat and tidy while the inside remains black and ugly. We know that we are helpless creatures without your Spirit. Please grant him to us, your weak children, and help us to love and serve you with every fiber of our being. These things we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Psalm 32:5
Minister:
I acknowledged my sin to you,
and I did not cover my iniquity;
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.
All: Amen.
CONFESSION OF FAITH Westminster Confession of Faith 8.1-2 Mr. Chris Turner, Ruling Elder
What does the Bible teach us about Christ our Mediator?
1. It pleased God, in his eternal purpose, to choose and ordain the Lord Jesus, his only begotten Son, to be the Mediator between God and man, the Prophet, Priest, and King, the Head and Savior of his church, the Heir of all things, and Judge of the world: unto whom he did from all eternity give a people, to be his seed, and to be by him in time redeemed, called, justified, sanctified, and glorified.
2. The Son of God, the second person in the Trinity, being very and eternal God, of one substance and equal with the Father, did, when the fullness of time was come, take upon him man’s nature, with all the essential properties, and common infirmities thereof, yet without sin; being conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost, in the womb of the virgin Mary, of her substance. So that two whole, perfect, and distinct natures, the Godhead and the manhood, were inseparably joined together in one person, without conversion, composition, or confusion. Which person is very God, and very man, yet one Christ, the only Mediator between God and man.
