~WORSHIP IN CONFESSION~

SCRIPTURE LESSON Matthew 12:1-21
Mr. Chris Turner, Ruling Elder
Jesus declares that he is the Lord of the Sabbath

CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN
All: Our Father in heaven, you who have told us that you made the Sabbath for man and not man for the Sabbath, we praise you and thank you for being mindful of our weaknesses and infirmities. On this day, you have given us the opportunity to commune with you and fellowship with your redeemed people. Yet, we so often find ourselves doing our own pleasures on your holy day. Too frequently, we violate the purpose of this holy day and spend it on pursuits that do not honor you. Forgive us, Lord. Forgive us for trampling underfoot the fourth commandment and denigrating your law. Forgive us for treating this day as common and ordinary. Please grant us a zeal for this day, knowing that you gave it to us for our good, we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Psalm 103:8, 10-12

Minister:
The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
All: Amen.

CONFESSION OF FAITH The Westminster Shorter Catechism Q58, 60-61
Mr. Chris Turner, Ruling Elder

Q. 58. What is required in the fourth commandment?
A. The fourth commandment requireth the keeping holy to God such set times as he hath appointed in his Word; expressly one whole day in seven, to be a holy Sabbath to himself.

Q. 60. How is the Sabbath to be sanctified?
A. The Sabbath is to be sanctified by a holy resting all that day, even from such worldly employments and recreations as are lawful on other days; and spending the whole time in the public and private exercises of God’s worship, except so much as is to be taken up in the works of necessity and mercy.

Q. 61. What is forbidden in the fourth commandment?
A. The fourth commandment forbiddeth the omission, or careless performance, of the duties required, and the profaning the day by idleness, or doing that which is in itself sinful, or by unnecessary thoughts, words, or works, about our worldly employments or recreations.
